Email Prefix
Definition: the part of the e-mail address that appears to the left of the @ symbol. For example, in “address@target.com“, the word “address“ is the e-mail prefix.

Before going into more detail about email prefixes, I would like to make a PSA about email addresses for business owners. It is unacceptable to use another company’s domain name in your professional email address. Hopefully you’re not professionaldude@hotmail.com or dubstepqt4sho@yahoo.com, or even worse – anything @aol.com or @earthlink.net. Advertise your own business – use the domain of your website in your email address. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft make enough money.

Think carefully before selecting email prefixes if you want to receive minimal spam. Here are three steps to bookmark or forward to your entrepreneurial friends:
Step 1: Don’t register your main email account with subscription-based lists. If your name is Dan Smith, and you own FatFreePotatoChips.com, you may not want to register DSmith@FatFreePotatoChips.com with random websites.
Step 2: Create more than one email to accept to spam and other assorted inquiries.
Step 3: Stay away from these commonly spammed email prefixes:
- info@
- contactus@
- sales@
- [your name]@
- mail@
- admin@
- inquires@
- support@
- webmaster@
- careers@
- complaints@
- billing@
Here are some substitute email prefixes to use with your domain name:
- Instead of “ContactUs@” – “Hello@” or “Howdy@”
- Instead of “CustomerService@” – “ImproveUs@” or “Upgrade@”
- Instead of “Careers” – “JoinTheTeam@” or just “TheTeam@”
These are some creative email prefixes I would like to see:
- For general inquiries – “QuickQuestion@”
- For a butcher shop – “OffTheHook@”
- For a dating site – “FallInLove@”
- For a DNA/paternity testing facility – “Congrats@”
- For a doctor’s office – “FeelBetter@”
What’s the best email prefix you’ve seen?
