“Meet Bob Loblaw” (Say that out loud for an example of what you should avoid when making your next pitch!)
Definition: a guideline for marketing presentations; on average, you should speak about 135 words per minute (so, if you have 15 minutes to make a presentation, your pitch should be no longer than 2,025 words)
Going way over 135 words? Your audience will be bombarded with language and will begin to daydream. Are you speaking too slow and falling under 135 words? You will irritate your audience and they may even start *gasp* interrupting you! Here’s how to ensure you stay within your time frame:
- Prepare an outline of your presentation with no more than 5 bullet points
- Put no more than three bullet points on a slide (and don’t read word for word)
- Review your presentation for interest (is it enough to keep someone engaged?)
- If you get nervous when you speak, practice your pitch twice with a stopwatch
- When you deliver your presentation, leave some time for Q&A
What are some of your pet peeves about watching someone present?
