Spray and Pray Marketing

Which tactic do you apply to your social media promotions?

Which tactic do you apply to your social media promotions?

Definition: Wasteful, mass marketing communications which are widely dispersed in the hope that some of the intended audience receive them; the term derives from the description of ‘uncontrolled, automatic gunfire’

Spray and Pray marketing is a thoughtless and non-strategic practice that in the long run can waste a lot of  your time and money. Casting a wide net can be a good thing ONLY when you are associating with the right group of consumers. However, spray and pray marketing does not discriminate. It’s the equivalent of starting a conversation to someone who is uninterested in what you have to say. Social media (namely Facebook and Twitter) are the top platforms for spray and pray marketing.

Want to avoid this embarrassing and detrimental practice? Ask yourself the following three questions:

1. Know exactly what you’re trying to accomplish. What do your products do and what role do they play on the market? Are you selling a unique product or service? Set your sights on a long-term goal and prepare yourself to get to that goal of where you want your business to go.

2. To whom do I want to sell my product and why? Will my product serve as a solution to a problem the consumer actually has? Also, is my product reasonably priced and attainable? Understand where your product is needed and narrow down your target market. Keep these ideal prospects in mind and aim to reach them.

3. Shoot your product straight to your target market. Get to know your customer’s habits and how you can best serve them. It is very important to hunt down that target market to ensure that you don’t waste precious time and money. That’s called working smarter, not harder!
